Joyful Sorrow
Joyful Sorrow is an indie folk duo primarily made up of steven zydek and heather sullivan zydek, with some accompaniment by friends on occassion. steve plays acoustic guitar and sings; heather sings and plays drums. they both write the songs.
Joyful Sorrow’s sound loosely fits into the indie pop/rock genre, but with acoustic guitar and soft male-female harmonies, there are hints of traditional folk and quiet rock in their music as well. Joyful Sorrow is influenced by artists like Ida, Versus, Kings of Convenience, The Sundays, Simon & Garfunkel, Getz & Gilberto, Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Sam Prekop and Damien Jurado.
Before playing in Joyful Sorrow, Steve had taken time off from music to focus on his newborn child. In 1999, his band Inlantic (404 Records) broke up when one of its members moved across the country. Prior to playing in Inlantic, Steve played in the Midwest indie rock bands Supporting Actress (Playing Field Records), Birdfeeder (Kulprit Konnexion), Plane Rides for Five Minute Drives, and many others, in addition to producing several of his own self-released solo-projects.
Heather comes from a musical family, with parents whose folk covers have entertained friends and family for years. And yet while she spent much of her life singing, she never played in a band. Instead, she ended up promoting indie shows at the now defunct underground coffeehouse The Agape Java Hut in Normal, Illinois and the Courtyard Cafe in Urbana, Illinois. Steve and Heather did produce one song together before they were married, under the band name "Due Notice." The instrumental "Intro", was released on a comp put out by Right On! Records circa 1997. They began writing the songs for Joyful Sorrow in 2001.
