Uncommon Ground ^ Andy Zipf
Andy Zipf

After recently taping a segment about satellite radio for NBC's Today Show, it is easy to see why the Washington Times states, “though he writes songs for the lonely he may not feel that way much longer.” With a haunting voice, evocative lyrics, strong melodic sense and a stunning live performance, the mood rock solo artist from the Washington, D.C. area, has drawn comparisons to other pop revolutionaries such as David Bowie, Neil Young, and Bjork.
Nominated for Best New Artist by the Washington Area Music Association, Andy’s music has been featured on MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” and “Date My Mom”, VH-1’s “You Rock” and in August 2004 he recorded an exclusive live performance for XM Satellite Radio’s the Loft Sessions. In June of 2005, Andy was the first in a series of artists in residence at the Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. The series was sponsored by BMI to showcase rising talent. According to BMI’s J.W. Johnson, “Andy Zipf is an artist to watch.”
Although he is known as an artist who sings for the lonely, Andy doesn’t keep all of his time for himself. He also stays involved in his local community by lending his talents, time and energy to several causes, from helping to spread awareness about the A.I.D.S. epidemic in Africa to protecting the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. In June he and a handful of prominent figures in D.C.’s music scene will be holding a benefit concert for an organization known as Miriam’s House. The home provides shelter and assistance for homeless women who are dealing with HIV and A.I.D.S.
Utilizing an I-Pod, old radio, laptop and other gadgetry, he pumps chords through an old effects laden Martin guitar to create a sound infused with rock, soul, gospel, hip hop, and electronic pop. This sonic tapestry forms a perfect musical bed for Andy’s sensual vocal delivery. His anthemic and powerful high notes contrasted with an intimate “pin drop” falsetto leave audiences from fourteen to forty in utter jaw dropping silence.
