Conceived in June 2003 by Jeremy Linzee and Matt Heslinga in a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Summer Lawns began writing stripped down, spare songs for a voice and two guitars. The two band members found a complement to their spare aesthetic in cellist Laurel Birkey, whose addition soon galvanized the group to explore writing and playing music as a chamber quartet would, a process in which each part was meticulously crafted as part of a larger whole. The songs which appeared at their first show made it apparent that they had hit upon an intriguing combination. The audience sat galvanized, wrapped in complete silence as their set of spare and intimate, yet lush songs unfolded around them. They immediately went into the studio to complete their first three-song EP “Your Now is My Surroundings” which was recorded in July 2003. After playing with this lineup for the summer, they added Kieran Kelly on drums. His touch and ability to read the direction of the songs began the process where the four members began to develop what has now become their signature mixture of lush essentialism. At work in their new studio they began building swirling ambient textures around their stripped down aesthetic. Similar to “And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out”-era Yo La Tengo or “Do You Know How To Waltz”-era Low, the songs married spare yet beautiful songwriting to a grander sonic palette. Their debut full-length record, titled “First We Waited… Then It Started.” was finished in October 2004. On the strength of tracks from the record, Jeremy was asked to perform at the Jeff Buckley tribute in Chicago in November 2004. |
