"This is what it would've sounded like if Maurice Ravel had composed for a rock band instead of an orchestra!" thought Ari Fox Lauren after listening to Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything album for the first time. Right then and there, the thirteen-year-old Ari knew that she had no choice in life; she had to become a composer.
Granted, Ari's musical inclinations had been apparent from the age of six, when, after deciding that the constraints of classical piano training were too unbearable for a sensitive spirit such as hers, Ari taught herself to play the instrument by ear. During adolescence, she also pursued vocal training, and dabbled briefly in percussion and blues slide guitar.
Ari's compositional style emphasizes unique and colorful chord changes. It is this approach that binds her diverse influences. "Because of the limitations of genre, we tend not to think of 'classical' composers, 'jazz' composers, and 'pop' composers in the same breath. On a musical level, when you get beyond the snobbery and the limited thinking, what is ultimately relevant is the music. In that regard, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, Donald Fagen, Stevie Wonder, Todd Rundgren, and Laura Nyro share a compositional approach, and a similarity of sound," asserts Ari. Armed with this philosophy, and with an urbane and humorous stage presence indicative of her East Coast roots, Ari Fox Lauren pursues her musical vision in every venue, and medium, possible. |
