When you think of banjos and acoustic guitars, the first thing that comes to mind is not necessarily the music that Ian Gorman plays. It’s a long way from bluegrass or old-time to a song like Alternate Plan, and just as far from folk music to Salt in the Wastebasket. Ian uses his banjo and guitar to create original and hauntingly beautiful moods. When combined with his reflective and powerful lyrics, the effect is striking and one that’s hard to forget.

Ian’s music has earned him the reputation as the kind of songwriter who speaks from the heart and always tells the truth. He connects with his audience, not so much as an entertainer, but as a friend who’s been where they’ve been and felt what they’ve felt.

Ian is first and foremost a songwriter and poet. In middle school, when most kids were bouncing basketballs and watching TV, Ian was writing and recording his own songs. When he was in college, it was coffeehouses and open mics instead of keg parties and rock shows. These days, Ian’s chosen the studio over the cubicle.

Never satisfied with being merely a performer, Ian has worked for and with the Midwest chapter of the National Folk Alliance (F.A.R.M.), The Wheatland Music Festival (Remus, MI), The Blissfest Music Festival (Cross Village, MI), The Cooper’s Glenn Bluegrass Festival (Kalamazoo, MI), and Western Michigan University’s School of Music as a recording engineer and teacher. Ian also teaches workshops in studio recording and live sound, and runs live sound at Kraftbrau Brewery (Kalamazoo’s acoustic-friendly venue).

In addition, Ian is a part owner of The Music Barn, a recording service that specializes in acoustic and traditional music. The Music Barn has made a niche for itself by going on location to record musicians in the environments that are most comfortable for them. "We’ll go to someone’s concert, home, backyard, anywhere they feel they can be their best", he says.

The rest of the time, Ian spends writing and producing his own music. For him, it’s not a full time job, it’s a full time life.
