Matt Ruby
Matt Ruby's sound is based on solid songs, strong hooks, and a shadowy vibe. His lower-register vocals (think LouReed-LeonardCohen-DavidBowie) combine with sixties' pop melodies, seventies' grooves, and new wave attitude to create a fresh, out-of-time sound.
Ruby, who fronts the Chicago band The Up And Up, first captured attention with his previous band, Plastics Hi-Fi. That outfit created a buzz in the Chicago scene in the early 00's (the band released a few records, toured the country, gigged with acts like Death Cab for Cutie, Alex Chilton, & Grandaddy, and even supplied the Chicago Blackhawks with their ad campaign song for the 2003-4 season). The usual sturm und drang of rock life eventually took its toll though and the band parted ways.
In late '03, Ruby began to craft a different, darker sound in his home studio. His new songs combine world-weary vocals with vintage sounds (farfisa, fuzz, 12-string, melodica, etc. – all performed by Ruby) and '70s era disco/R&B grooves. Ruby's thick lyrics about thin chicks, thin hours, and thin grips top off the tracks. |
