Eric Howell is a young North Carolinian transplanted north of Chicago. He specializes in an array of banjo styles including clawhammer, and plays a mean Doc Watson-style guitar. Eric has been a finalist in banjo contests such as Fiddler's Grove Festival in North Carolina, and has played with several bluegrass bands around Chicago, including the Lawrence Family Band and his own family band, the Howells. He's pursuing a degree in acoustics at Columbia College. Style: a real feel for the right notes
Bass player Robbie Hunsinger is a Georgian who started life as an award-winning oboist (including recording the Grammy-winning Bartok's "Wooden Prince" with Chicago Symphony Orchestra). Truly multi-talented, she has devoted herself in recent years to jazz, country and bluegrass. Robbie garnered 4 stars from DownBeat Magazine for her jazz album "Trio"[2003], recorded with Tatsu Aoki and Joseph Jarman. Style: a world of expression, laid in just so.
Kelly Kessler is an expat Hoosier whose love of the vast field of country - ancient Appalachian ballads, honkytonk weepers, bluegrass salvos - has fueled her music career. Deemed "local twanger extraordinaire" by Chicago Magazine, her heartfelt vocals, original guitar work and compelling songs provide the framework for the Whippoorwill sound. Kelly has been a mainstay in acoustic country with her bands the Texas Rubies and the Wichita Shut-Ins. Her solo album "The Salt Of Your Skin"[2002] enjoyed international airplay and a Top Five ranking on the Americana (FAR) Best of 2002 chart. Style: right on the money but not what you'd expect. |
