Andy White
With nine internationally released albums and a book of poetry to his name, Ireland’s Hot Press Songwriter of the Year will be presenting songs from his latest studio album BOY 40, as well as the best known songs from his back catalogue – ‘Religious Persuasion’, ‘Looking For James Joyce’s Grave’, ‘Street Scenes From My Heart’.
All US shows this autumn will feature Radoslav Lorkovic on accordion and piano. A classically trained musician from a Croatian-American family, Radoslav draws on a multitude of influences ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to the rawest, most basic blues, country and soul. Andy and Radoslav met up on tour in Italy in 1997 and have been playing together ever since – most recently at WOMAD festivals in Las Palmas (Spain) and Reading (UK).
Andy and Rad will bring with them a limited edition live album recorded in Minneapolis last spring entitled OAK CENTER. A record of a rip-roaring concert one magical evening in the mid west, it will be exclusively available at their live concerts.
A brief look at Andy White’s career demonstrates that he is a singer-songwriter of and for our times. Documenting the world and its current chaos and beauty with remarkable insight. He grew up in a full-blown terrorist war in Northern Ireland, though his home environment was an artistic and liberal one. Started writing poems at the age of nine and picked up a guitar when he heard John Lennon singing ‘Give Peace A Chance’.
Andy’s first single ‘Religious Persuasion’ was picked up by BBC Radio One. When the album which followed RAVE ON ANDY WHITE was hailed as a masterpiece – “Yer Man Is Brilliant!” ran the Melody Maker headline – Andy had arrived in style.
Since then he has worked with the greats of Irish music – Donal Lunny, Van Morrison, Sinead O’Connor – co-written with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Neil and Tim Finn, been produced by John Leckie (Radiohead, Pink Floyd) and toured the world playing all the great rock and folk festivals, including WOMAD festivals in Australia, the US, South Africa, Singapore and Spain. At WOMAD Reading this year Andy had the honour of being chosen as the musical director of the finale.
Andy’s latest studio album is BOY 40, featuring the edgy political concerns and offbeat humour of Andy’s best known work. Filled with charm and shot through with his trademark wit. Written on the road and recorded in both London and Melbourne, BOY 40 is an album about innocence and experience, the so-called war on terrorism, a search for spirituality, the Twelfth of July and … Italian Girls On Mopeds.
Andy and Radoslav create a special musical force together. They have a strong musical family bond – both their grandmothers being professional piano players, one in Ireland and one in Croatia. Their live album features songs from Andy’s back catalogue right up to and including BOY 40. Their live shows are not to be missed. For more information email and website addresses are below. |
