the band had its origin in champaign-urbana, illinois -- then called the tullys and later known as ghost houses. they were a minor part of the music scene that produced such bands as hum, poster children, and moon seven times. it was there that spiro bolos met jayne hartman. along with various other members, they played most of the main venues in town -- the blind pig, mabel's, treno's, etc. -- they also recorded a bunch of 4-track demos as well as a couple of songs at brendan gamble's cozy blanket studios.
Intoxicated with their wild successes, the band of course broke up. jayne flew off to spain and two of the other members were secretly married in sweden. Within a year, through the wondrous magic of email and the inspiration of a throwing muses show, jayne and spiro reunited and started writing and recording, and pulled together a live band that hit many of Chicago's hot spots over the next couple of years.
In 2000, the band went on hiatus while Jayne got hitched and worked on growing her family. Spiro was busy recording, producing, and playing with irradio. A couple of kids later for Jayne and a new job for Spiro, the time finally came to get back to the task at hand and record a cd. The result was a culmination of songs journeying from where they had been, where they were, and where they were headed; “From Lincoln to Continental” will be released in spring 2005.
Spiro and Jayne also recorded a version of “Furious” for Kuma-Chan’s “Hot Hands: A Tribute to Throwing Muses and Kristen Hersh".
With the cd nearly complete, SharashkA needed to complete it’s lineup so they could bring these songs to the stage. They found the missing links in two Chicago area musicians. Rich Alvarez (percussion) studied music in New York and has played with Safety in Mubers and Tribal Opera as well as having freelanced for various projects. Joe Mirabella (bass) has been playing the Chicago scene with such bands as Flash105 and BingeCrosby.
As a live band, SharashkA wants to give these songs somewhat of an alterego. Whereas the cd lends itself to long drives in the car or late night drinks in a coffeehouse, the live shows have an intensity that can only be achieved with the real-time interplay of the musicans themselves.
