Bob Livingston
“Bob Livingston tugged his cowboy hat, stuffed his jeans into his boots, hooked on his guitar strap and came on-stage in Madras, India. I'm here to play country music, what country? That's the question.'"
-Mike Zwerin, International Herald Tribune
BOB LIVINGSTON has never been a traditional Texas country musician living the honky-tonk life, even though he has spent more than his share of time on the roadhouse circuit with some of Texas’ more colorful musicians. Livingston moved to Austin in 1971 with Michael Martin Murphey after they recorded the album Geronimo’s Cadillac for A&M Records. Austin was a creative boomtown whirling with excitement and bustin' at the seams; the streets full of musicians, poets, students, artists and dancers. Livingston hooked up with Jerry Jeff Walker, who had just moved to Austin too, and they played ever bucket of blood from Lubbock to Maine and recorded several albums for MCA including 1973's quintessential Viva Terlingua! Livingston, Gary Nunn and John Inmon founded the Lost Gonzo Band and made two records for MCA and one for Capital. Rolling Stone called the Gonzo’s self titled debut record, “one of the best albums to ever come out of Austin.”
Livingston has been called a 'cosmic cowboy' for good reason. He has looked into the music and mysteries of other cultures and tours countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal, Morocco, Sri Lanka and the Middle East for the US State Department. His international concerts bring together a diversity of themes and influences, mixing instrumentation and insights from both east and west. Ragabilly! Country 'n Eastern! Last year, Livingston and Lloyd Maines produced a CD called "Mahatma Gandhi & Sitting Bull" that is infused with the music and color of his travels.
Livingston is promoting his CD around the country with a series of solo shows. He still records and tours with Jerry Jeff and has put together a group of musicians from Texas and India called Cowboys & Indians that combines the traditions of eastern and western music and lore. The Cowboys & Indians are part of the Texas Commission on the Art's Touring Roster and do shows in schools and theaters. Bob Livingston's story is full of trailblazing musical adventure - from his Texas roots...to the Wild East!
