Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, birth name Derryck Lawrence Weeden; Derryck grew up singing Gospel with the Weeden Family Singers and even toured the East coast at the early age of eight. Derryck is a soulful vocalist who over the years has been refining and mastering his musical craft, which allows him to reach every conceivable audience. He has been performing his “If Only for One Night" show, which is a tribute to Luther Vandross and the music of Mr. Marcus Miller who Derryck considers to be "one of the top premier writing teams of all time.” Although this show as been touring over the last four years, it seems that due to the death of Mr. Vandross, this years’ tour should be the highlight of this show. Derryck's first opportunity to front an R&B group was with The Triphonic Show Band in the late 70's. It was while he was with the Triphonic Show Band that he was noticed performing by Pebbles at The Jack the Rapper Convention, this put Derryck in the position of being chosen to become one of her backup singers while she toured in the 80's. It was while touring with Pebbles that he recorded his first demo, which was presented to Glen Flends, A&R Vice President at Uni-lable, then owned by MCA Records. Glen was so impressed with Derryck that he compared his voice to that of the very talented Luther Vandross. Derryck has worked with several talented musicians and producers over the last 10 years and one of the greatest compliments came from long time friend Tony Gonzales: "working with Derryck Lawrence is like having the silky smooth vocals of Luther Vandross, the spirituality of Bob Marley and the soulful sounds of Eryka Badu all in one." Derryck's talent cannot be explained in words, you simply must hear his voice to know the extent of his creativity and ability to mesmerize an audience. |
