(CBS) CHICAGO Rachael Ray is a budding star in the food world. She's also brimming with personality, which is why CBS 2's Vince Gerasole brought her to a spot on the North Side known for its distinct coffees to share a Table for 2. Get set for a caffeinated encounter, and we’re not just talking about the cappuccino. “Everyone thinks I'm cheery, really it's just lots of coffee,” confesses Rachael Ray, culinary “it” girl and Food Network host. “This is exactly the kind of coffee I like, a good strong cup of Joe,” she said. Rachael and I shared French pressed originals and frothy lattes at Uncommon Ground at 3800 N. Clark in Wrigleyville. “I love the presentation. This is so much like being in Europe isn't it? You can warm your hands,” Ray said. Here artful baristas can design a leaf in your foam and serve it up in signature frothy bowls. “You have to cup your cup, it's kind of sexy,” Ray said, wrapping her hands around the oversized mug. They also mix up a wickedly soothing cocoa. This coffee house is an “uncommon” find. Its front room is a traditional bar and its kitchen serves up innovative cuisine from breakfast favorites like spicy chilaquiles to a delectable sausage stuffed pork chop with a bourbon glaze. “That's a rough one -- salt, fat and booze all on one plate,” Ray said. “I chose uncommon ground because it's hip and happening,” Gerasole said. “Eh Joe, what do you know?” Ray said and toasted her mug. Rachael Ray is hip and happening. “That's enough for you?” she said pouring Gerasole half a cup. “What a lightweight, what a lightweight.” “But I'm not,” Gerasole said. Still, with Rachael at Uncommon Ground we had an uncommonly good time. “You're still sticking with your latte, aren't you?” Gerasole asked. Ray looks over with fake indignation and pulls her frothy cup toward her. “It's a cappuccino, thank you very much.” What a joy, Ray is just as vivacious and real in person as she is on TV, and she's Italian to boot.
