Kim Frieders
Aptly described as "candy abstraction", my work explores color, simplicity of form, spatial relationships and textural variety through a materials-focused approach. Many of my materials, including paint, wood, mediums and mark-making tools and found objects, are recycled or handed-down. I build layers and compositions based on color, shape or texture of materials, resulting in works with a distinctively exhuberant color palette, playful personalities, and varied surfaces which, reportedly, make you want to lick them.
I've made and exhibited art most of my life, from youth competitions beginning at age 8, to multi-media studies as a teen, to BFA completion with triple concentrations in painting, drawing and printmaking, to independent practice immersed in the Chicago art community. In 2006, I received a CAAP grant from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and in 2007 was featured on the cover of the application booklet. I've exhibited extensively, worked with a number of artists and art organizations, and completed a public mural on Western Ave at Bloomingdale.
