Diesel

Unlike the current swath of female recording artist bios, Diesel’s musical journey did not begin growing up with guitar in hand, listening to the family record collection, or sharing musical discoveries with siblings. In fact, by the time 12 year old Diesel’s stepmother died of cancer (leaving her father to raise three of his own children and one by his late wife), the tension was running so high in the house that when she began bringing home the formerly forbidden pop/rock albums home, no one noticed. As the older girls moved out of the house and the stringent religious boundaries began to crumble, Suzanne Vega’s ‘Solitude Standing’ hit the headphones first, and Diesel found comfort in hours of repeated listening to the sultry, earthy yet beyond-her-years worldly woman’s voice and lyrics. By the time she began her nomadic journey that ultimately led her to set her roots down on a Hawaiian island, the girl who was once dismissed from singing in the church choir knew her path in life would include writing and singing.
Chanteuse, yes. Performer, yes. Singer/songwriter, well, not in the usual sense. Diesel’s autobiographical songs yield poignant lyrics with catchy phrasing and make-you-turn-twice hooks, yet her music reveals an emotional interpreter of song far beyond that of what any one writer’s collection can yield. She’s formed friendships with writers spanning 4 generations, offering versions of forgotten b-side Elvis Presley torch songs, continuing visits to producer Josh Whitmore’s catalogue, and an intimate, whispery rendition of the widely known “Fever”. As a writer, she has continued to collaborate with Whitmore on personal songs of a woman’s journey through life. “Writing a song is, for me, a way to release myself from my own life’s chains and challenges. Lyrically, a song must stand alone as poetry, so that when you step away from the melody and feel the rhythm of the words in your own voice, you want to go back and hear the song again. It’s like a circle of discovery.”
Diesel is currently residing in Nashville, TN while she tours the Midwest, performing intimate house concerts, coffeehouses, and listening clubs. She has received airplay throughout the Midwest including the NPR syndicated “Women in Music,” hosted by Laney Goodman, and has been heard live on several college and NPR radio stations. She showcases regularly on the Americana Tonight! series in Nashville and has gained a loyal fan-base. In 2005, she formed a partnership, Soul Food, with fellow artist Celeste Johnson to raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank in Nashville and regionally. They are currently preparing for their third event while Diesel continues her journey into the heartland, and hearts, of America.
