Eliza Lynn
Voted Best Local Singer/Songwriter of 2006 by the Mountain Xpress!
“Combining elements of ragtime, folk, bluegrass, jazz, and world music, Lynn has created a unique blend of music that defies categorization and sticks to your spirit like old-time religion. The effect is never jarring or uneven; instead it’s a near-perfect blend of honesty and integrity in songwriting and music that envelopes you like wisp of smoke.” - Scott Elingberg, The Beat, May 2006
Eliza Lynn has honed her passion for roots music into her current performance of original songs, piedmont blues, and old time country, supporting her voice with guitar and banjo.
This fall, Eliza was invited to open John Hiatt’s show at The Orange Peel, in Asheville. She has also played at The Evening Muse, Flat Rock Music Festival, The Grey Eagle, LEAF Festival, The Biltmore Estate and many additional venues throughout the region.
Eliza’s band includes Sean Foley (keyboard and accordion) who studied classical, jazz and composition at the School of Music at UNC-G and has toured both nationally and internationally; Mike Alexander (upright bass) who has played music in 40 states with a variety of performers, such as Chuck Berry, Disappear Fear and Scrappy Hamilton; Jon Corbin (guitar) who is currently a member of the “runaway jugband,” The Rib Tips; Ian Cunningham (drums) who plays with a diverse group of musicians from straight ahead jazz to bluegrass; and Jill Fromewick who plays a mean blues harmonica.
Inspired by country blues duos - Cephas & Wiggins and Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee - Jill and Eliza have formed a country blues duo - the Grit Pixies. The Grit Pixies will be playing at the 1st Annual National Women in Blues Festival this November!
Eliza Lynn’s singing has been described as “silky…with more range than the Andes” by the Mountain Xpress. WCQS host Wayne Erbsen expressed admiration for the “great tone and great power” of Eliza’s singing. “It doesn’t come off on the radio, the power, because anybody can sound powerful with a flick of a switch. But she’s already peeled the paint off the studio walls in here. We’re gonna have to redo the whole studio.”
Eliza’s debut CD, Frisky or Fair, was released independently in late November, 2005.
“This disc surprises (pleasantly) right from the git-go. There is the picture on the cover of the disc of a red haired, freckled, fresh-faced country girl, and then, the disc opens with a tune that sounds as if it is out of the Cab Callaway song book (including muted cornet). The songs are sung with a voice that knows its power and reach, and is glad to stretch for new boundaries.”– Bob Gottlieb, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange
