Mark Clark
I play mainly a finger-style guitar, but also “flat-pick” (with my thumb), and sing. My material is mainly roots kind of stuff, old country blues, ragtime, 60s country-pop crossover, and Tin Pan Alley tunes.
I grew up in Belleville, Illinois (no, I was older than Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar -- but same high school) and was most influenced by AM pop radio, 60s folk/rock, bluegrass, and my parents’ record collection (old pop tunes). I luckily met a group of young guitarists in the 70s who were learning all kinds of ragtime and old-timey music on guitar.
But maybe the most lasting influence is hearing my mother play a Hammond Chord organ when I was growing up. So often I wake up humming old melodies that kids loved in the 1930s.
