Syndy was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1971 and received her BFA from the University of Iowa. Growing up in the river town known as the "Masterpiece on the Mississippi", she was surrounded by picturesque limestone bluffs, rolling hills, and America's river. She was also surrounded by the signs of the mid-1980's recession. Family farms, meat-packing and manufacturing companies went belly-up and the beautiful landscape became a field of boarded-up facades. This juxtapositional upbringing had a particular influence on her life and her artwork. Syndy's mixed-media artwork combines multiple materials, found objects and a unique layering process, which adds a depth of emotion that evokes both familiarity and mystery. Syndy has an intrinsic ability to seamlessly fuse ordinary images and sensibilities into the extraordinary, where the non-essential becomes essential and the abandoned, embraced. She moved to Chicago in 1994 and received her MFA in Art and Technology from the Art Institute of Chicago. Using her arts and technological education along with her artistic vision, Syndy has day-jobbed in the fields of experience design, project management and creative direction for award- winning public companies and has used that same experience to create her own company, Tiger Puppet Studios. Syndy's exhibited and permanent collection work has been seen in numerous publications and has won numerous awards. |
