Colby is a graduate of Oberlin College, and somewhere back in the early 1990s, he lived in Ann Arbor Mi where he taught guitar in the public schools and recorded for the Schoolkid's Records label. Colby moved to Chicago in 1995, and worked with theSpecial Consensus Bluegrass Band from 1995 to 1999. He has been teaching for the Old Town School since 1996 where is currently the dean of the mandolin department, co-chair of the bluegrass ensemble department, and a visiting lecturer for the fiddle department. He is also a principle member of the bluegrass group Sunnyside Up. Colby likes to get out and play locally with Anne-Marie Akin, Erin Flynn, Congress of Starlings, Rob Newhouse, John Hasbrouk and Ben Porter and many others. He has also signed on for brief periods with national folk artists Rani Arbo and Daisey Mayhem and Ronny Cox. Colby is not related to Rose Maddox, but his grandfather comes from Kentucky-Welsh coal miner stock that was transplanted in Palestine, Southern Illinois around the turn of the century. |
