Phil Rockrohr & the Lifters
Phil Rockrohr & The Lifters formed in Chicago after assembling in May 1999 to record a demo of Rockrohr's songs. The sessions yielded the 5-song EP, “Popcycle,” a celebrated local recording on WXRT-FM (93.1).
In January 2000, WXRT DJ Richard Milne, host of the Local Anesthetic Chicago music showcase, named “Popcycle” one of the show’s Top 5 releases of 1999.
The band drew the attention of friend Jay Bennett, then a member of the critically acclaimed Wilco, after Rockrohr gave him a copy of “Popcycle.” Bennett put the disc in his Top 5 of 1999 on www.spin.com.
Bennett produced the 2001 album “Phil Rockrohr & The Lifters,” which enjoyed a small amount of airplay on WXRT’s Local Anesthetic and Big Beat programs and on WLUW-FM (88.7), Loyola University’s student station.
In January 2005, Rockrohr released the EP “Buxom,” featuring members of The Lifters and fellow Chicago band The Industry in one of several line-ups Rockrohr assembled for ongoing recording sessions.
In February 2005, Chicago Tribune rock critic Greg Kot played "When Your Heart Is Broken" from "Buxom" on his weekly radio show, Sound Opinions, then on WXRT. Kot lumped the band among others he played that night as "national level acts."
In March 2005, Lifter drummer Tim Rutkowski died tragically in his sleep. During a lengthy search for a new drummer, Rockrohr recorded his first solo album, "Through the Haze," with former Lifter Dave Johnson (Favorite Saints) in late 2005 and early 2006.
In December 2005, the Lifters added drummer Tom Jasek (Shrimp Boat, Falstaff) and back-up vocalist Beth Bratkovic. In July 2006, Johnson and original bass player Tony Wisniewski joined the band.
