DAVID MORREALE A BIO
“Writing songs is honest work, like digging ditches, or laying bricks. It’s just not as hard,” says David Morreale. And while his music has been described as “a mellifluous blend of sawdust and King Syrup” and David himself as “the James Dean of the folk scene,” he’s an amiable and fiercely observant songwriter.
At 16, soon after his family moved to England, David left home and spent the remainder of his teenage years hitchhiking and playing his guitar in the London Underground and in cities all over Europe. Homelessness, hard luck, and constant movement became his way of life.
“I learned a lot about living and how hard it can be. Not eating real well, singing ten and twelve hours a day, making it as best I could,” says David, “being a cold, hungry 17 year old kid and having to choose between new guitar strings or breakfast was a great learning experience for sure. I had to kick a Scotsman named Tambourine Billy in the head once for trying to steal my tips in the London Underground. I learned how fast I could run in cowboy boots right after that!”
In 1990, David came back to America, and has spent the last ten years touring and playing in some of the country’s most prestigious venues including Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe, The Bottom Line in NYC and, The Point in Bryn Mawr, PA, among many others.
In 2005, David was a Kerrville New Folk Finalist at the famed Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas and won a Maryland State Arts Council Award in Composition for his new CD, “From The Dirt.” David was also a Recognised Finalist in The Plowshares Songwriting contest in 2004. David also took second place honours at the very first Susquehanna Music and Arts Festival in 2002. He has shared stages with a post Bob Marley Wailers, Brooks Williams, Tom Prasada-Rao, Ronny Cox, Freebo, Cliff Eberhardt, and others.
