Avec Moi Singer Songwriter When asked about Blood on the Tracks, Bob Dylan reported that it took “ten years to live and two years to write.” One gets the sense that the same could be said of Chicago duo Avec Moi’s portfolio. Both the music and the lyrics wander along like a life story, stopping to smell roses, cry with friends, and pass along lessons learned. It’s exhausting stuff and a refreshing change from the cathartic moanings of sad-sack folksters who seem stuck in perpetual adolescence. There’s a completeness to the litany of themes explored that lends profundity to them all. This might seem a bit heavy-handed if not for the percolating melodies that frontman Joshua Dugue (pronounced “Doo-Gay”) plucks out. His husky tenor calls to mind a union of Jeff Buckley and Cat Stevens. When set against his gutsy jazz-influenced guitar pluckings – and this guitar may well be strung with Dugue’s own guts, so palpable are the emotions – it creates a juxtaposition that defies passive listening. This music quietly demands attention. Equally important to the equation are the vocal wonder workings of co-singer and complimentary songwriter Jenna Fawcett, who should be lending her voice to every song ever written. Her every note is sheer delight, evocative of both heartbreak and growing up – which seem to be the band’s bread and butter. Avec Moi knows how to utilize its unique blend to full potential by exercising patience with it. There’s a pleasing sparseness to the sounds involved; Dugue makes as much music with silence as he does with his own guitar. Indeed, Avec Moi trusts their audience to fill in blanks of all sorts; rewarding those who meet their demands with an intoxicating experience. It has the rare quality of leaving you wiser for the listening. Contact Avec Moi:Website: http://www.myspace.com/avecmoimusicEmail Avec Moi: |
