Annie Baldwin is an improvisational, spoken word artist fusing her poetry with music and letting it linger wherever she takes up space.
Inspired by the genre of antifolk, she is known for her stream of consciousness improvisation. It’s the intimacy she evokes in her poems- or what some would call, wandering prose- that fosters this unexpected feeling of closeness between her and her audience.
In her recordings, she invites you into the room with her and captures sound and space through crackling cassette recorders. She is known too as a guerrilla poet as she gives her typewritten poems to strangers on flowers and performs spontaneously with street musicians all over the country. The most important part of her art is how you experience it. She walks with the knowledge that her work will make it to those who need it most. She is very intentional about where and how she leaves her poems for others to find- whether that be graffitied in sharpie in a bathroom stall, left on a bus seat, or heard in passing in a dive bar in Tennessee.
She creates art for liberation. She seeks to use vulnerability and authenticity for healing, community building, and unapologetically starting revolutions in her lifetime.
But mostly, she speaks her truth so others can do the same.
