Jeffrey Martin, J.E. Sunde, Anna Tivel

  • Uncommon Ground (Lakeview) 3800 North Clark Street Chicago, IL, 60613 United States (map)

Born in Texas in 1984, Jeffrey Martin quickly made his way to the Northwest where he discovered in nature and in people what would be the deep well for much of his songwriting.  His father was a lover of stories, especially in music, and Martin was raised with a careful ear cocked and listening to Neil Young, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, and Harry Chapin.  He was fortunate to live in Eugene, OR, for much of his adolescence, where in the late 90s and early 2000s there was a strong and steady flow of folk songwriters touring through.

Jeffrey Martin tours full time now. He is always making music, and he is always coming through your town. He misses teaching like you might miss a good old friend who you know you’ll meet again.  He has put out bunches of music since 2009, but he’s most proud of the more recent stuff.  He’s fortunate to be a part of the great and loving family that is Fluff and Gravy Records in Portland, OR. One Go Around, due out in October 2017, will be his 3rd full length album. At his luckiest, he’s shared shows with the likes of Sean Hayes, Gregory Alan Isakov, Jeffrey Foucault, Joe Pug,  Peter Mulvey, Amanda Shires, Tracy Grammer, David Wilcox, and others.

J.E. Sunde is the solo project of Jonathan Sunde. Before striking out on his own, Jon spent years making beautifully unusual music with The Daredevil Christopher Wright. In July, 2014 he released his first solo album, Shapes That Kiss The Lips Of God, with Cartouche Records out of Davenport, IA. On March, 3rd 2017 he released is his sophomore record Now I Feel Adored. Featuring vocals by Monica Martin of Phox, the album is described as “an exercise in careful subtraction....it takes some time to notice how little is going on with the richness of what is heard.”

Anna Tivel is a Portland, OR-based songwriter who grounds her work in quiet stories of everyday struggle. She’s a keen and detailed observer, and the characters in her songs come alive in small moments of beauty and despair.

With three full-length albums out on Portland’s well-loved Fluff & Gravy Records and a fourth due out this spring, Tivel spends her time writing and touring the US and overseas. Her most recent album, ‘Small Believer,’ was produced by guitar mastermind Austin Nevins (Josh Ritter, Anais Mitchell) and released in September of 2017. NPR praised the album, saying it “repeatedly achieves this exquisite balance of the quotidian and the sublime with imagery that's deeply poetic.” Her previous album, Heroes Waking Up was hailed by Folk Radio UK as "a superb and sublime album from a voice that deserves to be shouted from the highest rooftops.”
