This 6-member vocal group, First Take, directed by Dr. Jeremy Fox, is from the School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa. The group performs everything from R&B to jazz to a cappella music, and original songs/compositions. First Take has been accepted in the past to perform at the Jazz Education Network's International Conference, as well as the International Association of Jazz Educators. The ensemble has wide acclaim, including an award from Downbeat Magazine for "Best College Vocal Ensemble." The group tours each spring, and co-hosts a vocal music festival in Creston, Iowa each April.
Grammy-nominated arranger Dr. Jeremy Fox earned his B.M. degree in Piano-Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University, and his M.M. and D.M.A. in Jazz Composition from the University of Miami. He has taught music at Indiana University, the University of Miami, and now the School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa. His music has been performed by such artists as: John Secada, Theo Bleckmann, Terence Blanchard, m-pact, Cadence, and Metropolitan Opera singers Eric Owens and Denyce Graves. Twice in 2013, he conducted and was musical director for a concert of “Bossa Nova Sinfónico” with the Costa Rican National Orchestra and Brazilian singer Rose Max. He has also twice acted as the guest conductor for the famed Henry Mancini Institute Jazz Orchestra, based in Miami.
