Ikechi Chijiuba Ihemeson, better known by his artist name ‘Kechi, is a vocalist, songwriter, producer and poet. Born and raised in the west suburbs of Chicago, ‘Kechi grew up surrounded by a diverse blend of music, including R&B/soul, hip hop, gospel, classical, jazz, Igbo highlife, and rock ‘n’ roll, all of which he incorporates to his music making. He starting out with singing melodies at home he memorized or improvised at the age of 4. ‘Kechi began his musical training in third grade when he was enrolled in the StageCoach Theatre Arts School in Hinsdale, IL. Around that time, he started to sing in church, where he also learned to play the drums. He picked up the trumpet at age 11, and taught himself to play the piano. ‘Kechi graduated from Hinsdale Central High School, being involved in the school’s music and theatre department. ‘Kechi is currently at Northwestern University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the Bienen School of Music. He acts as the music director and arranges for his a cappella group Soul4Real, and he co-music directs Northwestern Community Ensemble, the gospel choir on campus. Outside of vocal ensembles, he has written music for Studio 22 Productions, a film group on campus, as well as Chicago Fringe Opera’s Rossini Project. 'Kechi's debut music project, Late Night Love Confessions, is comprised of original songs and poetry performed in an intimate setting.
Honey Butter is a soul/pop band that performs all original music with improvised solos in every performance. Lexi Vollero of Scene and Heard describes the band: "the instrumentalists' jazz sensibilities combine with R&B and pop influences to produce the playful riffs and smooth solos that characterize Honey Butter's distinct, and simply addictive style".
