Homegrown Residency at Uncommon Ground is a weekly residency offering emerging Chicago musicians a fertile bed to plant their roots and grow. Every Tuesday for one month, a new emerging band tests their new material, reveals their ongoing process and are joined by hand picked musical guests as listeners enjoy beer from Greenstar Brewery, the first all organic brewery in IL, and food from the first 4-star restaurant with a certified organic rooftop farm in the U.S. On top of this, 10% of the proceeds go towards a non-profit organization chosen by the resident. This month, STK has chosen to support the Environmental Law & Policy Center, “a leading public interest environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization.” Overall, they help “develop and lead successful strategic advocacy campaigns to improve environmental quality and protect our natural resources. We are public interest environmental entrepreneurs who engage in creative business dealmaking with diverse interests to put into practice our belief that environmental progress and economic development can be achieved together.”

Originating from Loyola University Chicago, STK consists of Sam Frederickson, Troy Richardson, and Kabir Dalawari. Each having unique musical backgrounds, their music incorporates elements of rock, jazz, and funk that mesh together to create a unique sound. They have played at prominent Chicago venues such as Bottom Lounge, and are hoping to share their music with more people.

While embracing the neo-soul sound of contemporary artists such as Erykah Badu and Moonchild, the members of safetrip bring an extensive knowledge and understanding of jazz, 60’s rock, funk, grunge, and more to create original music that reflect the culmination of the band’s musical heroes. Floating on top of this musical fusion is the voice, poetry, and story of Ilana Weisbach, a 19 year old vocalist whose voice encapsulates the sound and artistry of the band. Drawing from psychedelic and introspective moments of truth and realization, her lyrical and stylistic influences draw heavily from the natural world and female artists such as Nai Palm, Noname, and Amy Whinehouse.
